You will leave a legacy with or without children. If we really understood how short our life on this earth was, would we live any differently? Would we devote our lives to the pursuit of wealth and symbols of status if we realized how soon those possessions would mean so little and left behind? The truth is that the illusion of permanence distorts our perception and shapes our behavior, often giving priority over that which God gives priority.
If you are a parent of young children - do you grasp the reality that it is in a blink of an eye that you will be hugging your children goodbye as they venture out on their own? What are you doing today to help them tomorrow? Making sure they have the latest gadget? Planning for future education? Signing them up for the best club sport in hopes they will be good enough to earn a scholarship? How about the souls of your children? Are you (honestly) applying as much effort as you do with all those other things (which in and of themselves are not wrong) you spend time and money on to help them know Christ personally?
Think about the privilege it is to introduce and disciple your children to become life-long followers of Jesus! No doubt it is not easy in this world to help your children develop an eternal perspective that properly focuses on evaluating life decisions, trials, circumstances and goals through the lens of eternity, prioritizing spiritual growth and God’s kingdom over temporary pursuits. But from personal experience it is so worth it! 3 John 4 tells us: “I have no greater joy than this, to hear of my children walking in the Truth” -- A big AMEN to that!!
Will neglect or worse ignore this incredible opportunity or go against the grain of our culture and help your children build a foundation of faith and an eternal perspective that will sustain them through the trials of this life and take them into eternity with God in heaven?
We are told in Deuteronomy 6:5-7 “To love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. These words… shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children and shall talk to them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the Way and when you lie down and when you rise up”. Pretty clear! Logic tells us to stay on our knees and ask God for His strength and wisdom to do the job to which He has called us.
