God the Father wrote the following tribute to King David, one of the most famous individuals in the Old Testament. “I have found David son of Jesse a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want Him to do” (Acts 13:22).
David’s life story is intriguing! It’s a rags to riches story, starting out as a shepherd boy, to a fierce warrior and king! As a great warrior and king, David took the tiny nation of Israel and helped it to become a powerful kingdom that ruled a large part of the Middle East during the tenth century B.C. Yet, David had issues – he committed adultery and attempted to cover his tracks by putting the woman’s husband on the front lines of battle where he was killed. He was a negligent father and his family was plagued with strife and tragedy. All of which can be read about in II Samuel 11-18.
So how can such a man become known as a man after God’s own heart? Bottom-line - God’s grace! In David’s case we can see into his heart through the Psalms, many were written by him and in his writings you will find a man who is as emotionally honest as any you will ever meet! You will find a man whose heart longs to follow and please God. God never expects perfection from David or anyone else, after all the Bible tells us that no one is perfect, not one (Romans 3:10). Only His Son measured up to perfection.
You may think that becoming a man after God’s own heart is unrealistic because you have a tendency to take three steps forward and two steps back in your walk with Him. You may think that being a man after God’s own heart is too lofty or that it’s impossible because of your past. WRONG! God looks at the heart and that is what God does when he looks at you! When it comes to becoming a man after God’s own heart, we can always count on the grace of God, a grace that enables us and strengthens us at all times.
To become a man after God’s own heart can only happen after putting your faith in Jesus Christ, the One who lived, died and was resurrected on your behalf. His sacrifice allows all who put their trust in Him to enter into a right relationship with God the Father. As a Christ-follower, sin will still occur, but it will cease to be the predominant pattern in our lives. Why? Because the Holy Spirit lives in us, He gives us a desire to repent so that our fellowship with the Father remains the priority, not the sin!
What’s your heart’s desire?
